Analysis of genome-wide differentiation between native and introduced populations of the cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas and Crassostrea angulata ArchiMer

The Pacific cupped oyster is genetically subdivided into two sister taxa, Crassostrea gigas and C. angulata, which are in contact in the north-western Pacific. The nature and origin of their genetic and taxonomic differentiation remains controversial due the lack of known reproductive barriers and the high degree of morphologic similarity. In particular, whether the presence of ecological and/or intrinsic isolating mechanisms contributes to species divergence is unknown. The recent co-introduction of both taxa into Europe offers a unique opportunity to test how genetic differentiation is maintained under new environmental and demographic conditions. We generated a pseudo-chromosome assembly of the Pacific oyster genome using a combination of BAC-end...

Diversité génétique chez les huîtres creuses du genre Crassostrea : quelles ressources pour quelle amélioration des productions de C; gigas? ArchiMer
Boudry, Pierre.
Despite the economic importance of oyster farming, knowledge about genetic resources of these species is still limited. The objectives of my research were to provide further information about (1) taxomomy, phylogeny and phylogeography of Crassostrea oysters, (2) to compare C. gigas and C. angulata strains of various geographic origins and (3) to study phenotypic and genetic variation for traits of aquacultural interest in C. gigas. Studies based on DNA polymorphism and chromosomes allowed to improve or correct identification, geographic range and phylogeographic relationships among several species. The comparison of various strains of C. gigas and C. angulata, both in laboratory and field conditions, revealed significant differences among taxa and the...

Estimation du stock d'huîtres creuses Crassostrea gigas, en élevage en Baie de Cancale, en octobre 2002 ArchiMer
Mazurie, Joseph; Bouget, Jean-francois.
in order to estimate the carrying capacity of Mont Saint-Michel Bay, the stock (or biomass) of cupped oysters, Crassostrea gigas, cultivated intertidally, in Cancale Bay, has been estimated in october 2002. Aerial photographs, at 2 scales (1/10 000 and 1/2000), provided by the mollusc farmers union, have been used to estimate the cumulative length of surelevaged trestles (« tables ») and the occupation rate by oyster bags. A field survey, between the 7th and 9th of october 2002, has been conducted by Ifremer with the help of « Lycée Maritime de Saint-Malo », on 40 sampled stations : 3 subsample bags per station were examined (counts and weights of different age-class oysters). 309 ha out of 333 leased ha were considered exploited (after elimination of...

Evidence for the presence of the Portuguese oyster, Crassostrea angulata, in northern China ArchiMer
Lapegue, Sylvie; Batista, Frederico; Heurtebise, Serge; Yu, Ziniu; Boudry, Pierre.
The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg), and the Portuguese oyster, C. angulata (Lamarck), are two closely related taxa. Although these two taxa were both introduced from Asia into Europe. one (C. gigas) was voluntarily introduced in the early 1970s, whereas the other (C. angulata) was presumed to be present in Europe for at least four centuries, but nearly disappeared because of disease. Few C. angulata populations remained in southern Portugal, Spain and Morocco and their putative origin was traced in Taiwan. The present paper reports evidence for its presence in Northern China. We reanalyzed recently published mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase C subunit I (COI) sequence data from presumed Dalianwan oysters (C. talienwhanensis) and compared them...

Genetic Characterization of Cupped Oyster Resources in Europe Using Informative Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) Panels ArchiMer
Lapegue, Sylvie; Heurtebise, Serge; Cornette, Florence; Guichoux, Erwan; Gagnaire, Pierre-alexandre.
The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, was voluntarily introduced from Japan and British Columbia into Europe in the early 1970s, mainly to replace the Portuguese oyster, Crassostrea angulata, in the French shellfish industry, following a severe disease outbreak. Since then, the two species have been in contact in southern Europe and, therefore, have the potential to exchange genes. Recent evolutionary genomic works have provided empirical evidence that C. gigas and C. angulata exhibit partial reproductive isolation. Although hybridization occurs in nature, the rate of interspecific gene flow varies across the genome, resulting in highly heterogeneous genome divergence. Taking this biological property into account is important to characterize genetic...
